Pope Benedict XVI will resign on Feb. 28, the Vatican has confirmed.
He is the first pontiff to resign while in office in nearly 600 years.
The Pope has been been in declining health and has been recently been using a cane.
The Pope nnounced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals on Monday morning.
