AS a way of addressing the fallout of ban on okada in Lagos
State, the government will commence recertification of affected
operators this week, with the aim of providing them with gainful
employment in the state service.
The state Commissioner for
Transportation, Mr Kayode Opeifa, made the disclosure in Ikorodu, during
the public enlightenment programme organised for the commercial
motorists and operators.
Opeifa, who spoke at the event attended
by former deputy governor, Rafiu Ogunleye; majority leader, state House
of Assembly, Honourable Sanai Agunbiade, political and community leaders
and stakeholders, among others, said the government was desirous to
create job for the okada operators.
According to the
commissioner, the law restricting okada operators from plying certain
routes in the state was not meant to punish anybody, but for the good of
the state and its people, adding that the re-certification would ensure
that those affected were employed by the state government.
He urged the affected people in Ikorodu to go to the Works Yard in the town to get recertified for job placement.
Speaking
further, the commissioner, who said the law on okada had come to stay,
noted that the enlightenment was to engage stakeholders and see what
could be done to improve or renew the law if the need be.
