PRESIDENT
Goodluck Jonathan and his Indonesian counterpart, Suliso Bambang
Yudhoyono, met in Abuja on Saturday with the Nigerian host pleading with
his guest to stay execution in the case of convicted Nigerians awaiting
death in Indonesia.
The Indonesian President, who arrived State House, Abuja at about
3.30 pm, was received by President Jonathan and was treated to a guard
of honour mounted by the Brigade of Guards as well as a 21-gun salute.
The two countries are now to explore opportunities for an Agreement
of Exchange of Prisoners and Mutual Legal Assistance between the two
countries.
Both President Jonathan and his guest had earlier noted, with
concern, the increasing number of Nigerians in detention, jails and
death row in Indonesia for drug related offences and financial crimes.
After their bilateral talks, both leaders agreed to jointly tackle
the menace insecurity, terrorism and cooperate in peace keeping
operations.
Addressing newsmen after the meeting, President Jonathan said they
discussed “areas that we can work together, like food, agriculture,
energy, politics and security, particularly, in international peace
keeping operations”.
The Indonesian leader was accompanied by his wife, Ani.
